For families

What working together looks like.

One comprehensive evaluation. A clear path forward.

At Root + Rise, we believe that understanding why handwriting is difficult is the first step toward helping children become confident writers.

Our comprehensive handwriting evaluation package brings together occupational therapy assessment, individualized recommendations, and collaboration with families and educators. The goal is to make sure everyone supporting your child has the information and tools they need to work toward shared goals.

  1. Free Discovery Call

    Let's start with a conversation.

We'll begin with a complimentary 15-minute call to discuss your concerns, learn about your child's handwriting experience, and determine whether a comprehensive handwriting evaluation is the right next step.

  2. Comprehensive Handwriting Evaluation

    Looking beyond pencil and paper.

During an in-person occupational therapy evaluation, we'll use the Learning Without Tears® Print Tool to assess your child's handwriting skills.

Guided by our ROOTS framework, we'll also explore the foundational skills that may be influencing handwriting, such as fine motor coordination, pencil grasp, visual-motor integration, postural stability, and sensory processing. Additional assessments are selected based on your child's individual needs.

The goal is to understand not just what your child is struggling with, but why, so we can develop an individualized plan that addresses the skills that matter most.

  3. Results & Collaborative Planning

Getting everyone on the same page.

Following the evaluation, we'll meet virtually for a 30-minute consultation to review your child's results, discuss their strengths and areas of need, and walk through individualized recommendations.

You'll receive a comprehensive written evaluation report that includes:

    • Handwriting assessment findings and relevant foundational skill observations
    • Individualized handwriting goals
    • Practical recommendations and activities for home
    • Classroom strategies and recommendations that can be shared with your child's educational team

Your package also includes one optional 20-minute virtual consultation with your child's school team.

With your permission, we'll connect with educators to review relevant findings, discuss classroom strategies, and support a consistent approach to handwriting instruction.

We believe children benefit when families, educators, and therapists have access to the same information and are working together.

  4. Individualized Handwriting Intervention

    Building skills. Growing confidence.

Following the evaluation, families may choose to continue with individualized handwriting intervention sessions.

Using our RISE approach, sessions combine explicit handwriting instruction with targeted activities to address the goals identified during the evaluation.

We'll focus on building skills, supporting independence, and helping your child carry what they've learned into everyday writing activities at home and school.

Ongoing intervention sessions are scheduled and billed separately from the evaluation package.

Where we meet

Handwriting Support, Right Where Your Child Feels at Home

At Root + Rise, we believe children learn best when they feel comfortable, confident, and connected. That's why our handwriting evaluations and individualized intervention sessions take place in your family home, after school, rather than in a traditional clinic setting.

Working in a child's familiar environment allows us to build meaningful connections, observe handwriting skills in a natural setting, and develop practical strategies that fit into everyday family routines. It also eliminates the need for another after-school trip, making handwriting support more accessible and convenient for busy families.

Root + Rise provides in-home handwriting services throughout Chittenden County, Vermont, and surrounding areas. Travel outside Chittenden County may be accommodated on a case-by-case basis.
